COVID-19 Update: Increased Cases Have Changed Restrictions – Saturay, 20 March

I’ve just heard the news from Premier Daniel Andrews that following the recent rise in the number of cases of COVID-19 in Victorian community, the State Government will be tightening restrictions again as a measure to combat this increased risk to public health.

24 hours can be a long time in tourism. Just yesterday our This Week In Tourism newsletter was optimistic about the further easing of restrictions on the horizon.

It’s a reminder that we’re in a global health crisis and the gains made can be quickly lost when people aren’t as vigilant as needed.

Some of the main points announced by the Premier this afternoon included:

      • Venues including restaurants, cafes, pubs, museums that were scheduled to increase to 50 people on Monday 22 June will remain at 20 people in any one space.
      • Venues scheduled to open on Monday 22 June – including gyms, cinemas and theatres – will still be able to, but with a maximum of 20 people.
      • Household visitors are limited to 5 guests and groups of ten can meet outside.

You can read the full statement from the Premier here.

As further information and tourism guidelines are updated by the official Victorian Government Department of Health and Human Services, we’ll keep you informed.

Like you, I’m disappointed at what feels like a backward step just as we were starting to gain some forward momentum. I’m hopeful that the public will respond to this by being more careful with their hygiene and activities so we can move in the right direction again from 13 July.

      Sincerely,

      Brett Ince
