Better Accessibility doesn’t need to be expensive, writes Ryan Smith from The Access Agency. Below, he shares 5 purchases under $100 that’ll help you improve access at your business.
Tactile Toilet Signs – $35 – $50

Off-the-shelf toilet signs with Braille and tactile lettering are inexpensive and relatively easy to install. Make sure they’re installed 1,00-1,600mm from the floor level and fixed to the wall on the handle or lock side of the door.
Communication Board – $0 – $30

A communication board (sometimes referred to as an augmentative and alternative communication or AAC board)
Wedge Threshold Ramp – $20 – $50

The trusty old wedge ramp should not be underestimated. A small step, anywhere up to 10mm can be made easy to cross – and less of a trip hazard with a recycled temporary ramp. Keep it under 15mm in height to enable independent movement. If your step is higher, you’ll need a longer ramp or something more permanent.
Large Print, Clear Labels – $0 – $10

Often overlooked, labels for products or instructions in your business should be easy to read for everyone. Clear, large-format typography can be aligned with your brand font and colours to make an accessible professional feel.
Lever-style Door Handles – $40 – $100

Round door knobs are a pain to use. Level-style door handles offer easier access for everyone. They’re relatively simple to install and make it easier for everyone to pass – even using your elbow when you’ve got your hands full.
